Key Terms by Grade
NOTE: New terms will be added as they are completed throughout the year.
When we are responding to text in Grades 6, 7, & 8, we use the acronyms CSI or PPE. Here is what they mean:
Claim/Point
What is your answer to the question?
What do you want to prove?
What do you believe to be true?
Support/Proof
What is an example(s) or evidence from the text that shows your claim/proves your point?
What is the CONTEXT of your example? (Describe what has happened/is happening in the situation and who is speaking if there is dialogue.) This comes before the example.
Your example can be a direct quote or you can paraphrase (summarize) it, but in both cases, you need a page number if there is one. Example: (22).
A quote often makes your example(s) stronger.
Insight/Explanation (not all, but at least one or two of these things should be addressed in your insight)
How does the example(s) prove your claim?
What happens as a result of this situation?
Why is this important for the reader to notice?
What do the characters/can we learn from this?
What connection(s) can you make to this situation?
