When to start a new paragraph in narrative:

 

Follow the SPIT rule.  Start a new paragraph when there is a NEW:

 

 

Speaker

Place

Idea

Time

 

 

When editing, use the symbol ¶ to indicate a new paragraph.  This is particularly important to know for writing stories, book reports, etc.
